cultural fingerprint
/ˈkʌltʃərəl ˈfɪŋɡərˌprɪnt/ n. 1 a collection of repeated local “stencils” unique to a place, often emerging from cultural, sociopolitical, or regulatory factors. 2 a single variation or “fingerprint” within such a collection.
These terms and their initial definitions took shape during a train ride back to London in the summer of 2025, in conversation with my dear friend Arushi Jain: a brilliant musician whose practice reimagines Indian classical sounds by combining them with modular synths.
